Amazing Apple Doughnuts

Nothing makes me happier than when I can play in the kitchen with my kids. When we create meals together, we create memories. Seeing their little faces excited to make a recipe with me is what it’s all about and these Amazing Apple Doughnuts are a favorite of theirs to make. Let’s get started!

Making your doughnuts:

First, protect your area with some parchment paper/tablecloth/towels. We worked on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper for easy clean-up. Next, put your yogurt in the freezer for about 10 minutes. It will make it a little thicker and easier to spread on your apples. We like to use a few different yogurt varieties to have fun with flavor and color.

Next, gather some sweet or savory toppings. Peanut butter and marshmallow are my favorite, but get creative! You can use sprinkles, chocolate chips, pretzels, raisins- we even made one with granola and dried cherries! I like to put my toppings in a mini muffin pan to keep them separate.

After that, you’ll want to core and slice your apples. (See my “Mom tip” below for help with this.) As for which apples to use: the favorites in our house are Gala, Fuji, and Golden Delicious. But any apple you would like to use is fine. There are no bad apples lol.

Lastly, spread some yogurt, peanut butter or almond butter on your apple slices and top away!

This is such a fun project for kids to make after school or on a rainy day!

“Mom” Tip:

Coring an apple can be tricky but I have an easy fix. First, slice a thin layer off the top and bottom of the apple. Next, cut the apple in 1/4 inch rounds. Lastly, core each slice, cutting out a circle in the center for a nice, doughnut shape. I used a 1 inch round cookie cutter to do the job, from a set I have like this one. A knife works just as well if you don’t have a cookie cutter.

Course Snack
Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2-3 apples I like Gala, Fuji, or Golden Delicious
  • "icing" -yogurt varieties of your choice- frozen for ~10 min
  • "icing" -nut butter (peanut, almond, cashew are all great- feel free to omit if nut free)
  • "icing" -cream cheese if desired
  • different toppings of choice-sprinkles, raisins, chocolate chips, pretzels, marshmallows, granola, dried fruits, etc.

Instructions

  • Place yogurts (if using) in freezer for about 10 minutes to thicken.
  • Slice your apples in 1/4 inch slices and core the centers. (See note below for help.)
  • Gather the other "icings" you will be using.
  • Next, gather your toppings.
  • Spread your "icing" of choice on each apple doughnut ring and top with desired toppings. Enjoy!

Notes

Instead of coring the entire apple at once, try this method. Slice a thin layer off the top and bottoms of the apples. Then slice each apple in 1/4 inch slices. Lastly, core each apple slice separately, using a one inch circle cookie cutter or a knife.
